i say, i've been better. but i've also been worse. >> called for arm astrong to be stripped of his seven tour de france titles and banned from the sport for life. the international cycling union will respond to the charges on monday. to michigan now where police are searching for a gunman. authorities believe the shootings, at least 15 so far across three counties are connected. no one has been injured. they set up a multi-agency task force to try to track down the suspected shooter. he is supposedly firing a handgun from his car at a other drivers. they are reportedly looking for an older dark chevy cavalier or ford mustang. to politics now and with just 17 days until the election, we have new numbers in those big battleground states. here's the latest cnn/orc poll. president obama and mitt romney

are in a dead heat in florida. romney leads by just one points. that makes monday's final presidential debate in boca raton all the more critical. it might also explain why mitt romney and paul ryan teamed up in daytona beach for a rally yesterday. today romney is hunkering down in florida and vice president joe biden is also in florida for a two-day swing. new charges of voter fraud in the campaign state of virginia. throwing registration forms into his dumpster. investigators say he worked for a private consulting firm, which was contracted by the republican party to register voters. the sheriff says small threw out eight voter forms and they do not believe this is widespread. the "salt lake city tribune" handed a big endorsement

president obama yesterday. we have watched him morph into a friend of a far right and then back toward the center. well, the polls in the swing states are the closest they've been this election season, especially in florida. >> certainly there. campaigns are fighting for an advantage and here's our national political correspondent jim acosta with more. >> randi and victor, even though it's early, we're hearing closing arguments from both campaigns from the president who says romney has no core to romney who says the president has no plan. while mitt romney is preparing for his final debate in florida, he and his running mate paul ryan are testing out their message for the next message to come. >> they have no agenda for the future, no agenda for america and no agenda for the second term. it's a good thing, they won't

have a second term. they have, they've been reduced to petty a tacks and silly word games. just watch it, the obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign. >> we have to work on a collaborative basis. >> reporter: another part of that swing state pitch can be found in this new romney campaign ad that casts the gop nominee as a bipartisan problem solver. >> but we need to have leadership. leadership in washington that will actually bring people together and get the job done and could not care less if it's a republican or a democrat. >> reporter: it's a change in tone for a candidate who once called himself a severely conservative governor during the primaries. prompting the governor of etch-a-sketching his past. >> we have to name this condition he's going through. i think it's called romnesia.

>> reporter: the president is getting a boost from new state unemployment numbers showing it dropping in florida, ohio, nevada, colorado and wisconsin. romney had a joke for the economy at a benefit dinner in new york where he and the president exchanged punchlines. friday's map reads like a calendar. the more candidates and surrogates flooding into battlegrounds, the closer the election. >> the american people are so much better, so much stronger, take so much more responsibility. neither congressman ryan or governor romney give them credit for. >> reporter: newspaper endorsements are also starting to come in after picking president obama four years ago, the "orlando sentinel" chose romney. but "denver post" said the economy has made demonstrable but hardly recognizable progress. a biker convention is in town

for the weekend, florida voters are getting revved up. >> i'm undecided. but leaning towards romney, though. >> why is that? >> well, because i'm not crazy about what obama has done in a nutshell. >> i really don't like romney that much. i would have voted for him if he had respect for women. >> reporter: the candidates will be in swing states. the president will stay here in florida while romney and ryan will head off to colorado. randi and victor. >> thanks, jim. joe walsh has paused an uproar after talking about his views on abortion. he said he's pro life with no exception and the exception of life for the mother is just an excuse for an abortion any time for any reason. that has supporters of abortion rights outraged, especially jackie spear. she talked to cnn's john king about her own abortions. >> i had many pregnancies. i have had miscarriages.

i had first trimester abortion. that is dnc and i had second trimester abortions. that's what happened when i lost the fetus at 17 weeks. it had, substantial complications to that pregnancy and i was at risk. i guess i'm frustrated by the fact that there are some members of the congress that can't, can't use science and medicine to make their statements. i mean, they make utterly false statements. >> the uproar has forced walsh to clarify his statements. he's prolife for child and mother. >> when it comes to having an abortion to save the life of a mother, i will say, again, that outside of the very rare circumstances, such as ectopic

pregnancies, during which the mother and baby will die if the baby is not aborted and other rare health issues and circumstances, the research is pretty clear. that with the advances in modern medicine and invasive and traumatic procedure like an abortion is often, thankfully, not necessary to save the life of a mother. >> 600 women die each year according to obstetricians and gynecologists. the dow dropped 205 points on friday on the 25th anniversary of the worst one-day crash in history. on october 19th, 1987. the dow industrial average dropped 22%. today's markets are showing concern over worse than expected corporate earnings and the instability in europe. the uncommitted vote. with just over two weeks to go, it can still turn the election

i had a flooring business and it was doing really great. we had so many jobs. everything was rolling. i was on the right path. and then the economy crashed and housing market crashed and slowly it got worse and worse and i had no work. >> people think you're a teacher? >> come in probably say, what are you we doing today, professor? >> going back to school and being 43. i'm going to be in class with 17 and 18 year olds. i think i'll do okay because i've done a lot of coaching at middle school level and i can relate to them a little bit. >> some of the runners in the olympics -- they'll run in the bag and kind of hang back and see what they have in front of them and then at the end, bang, put it hard.

just keep kicking. when i voted for president obama really felt that things were going to get better. he really instilled a lot of hope in me and my family. and then i started to lose that hope and was unsure about where he's leading our country. a really good detail plan for the economy will definitely sway my vote one way or the other. >> with this textbook also comes a cd in the back of the book. if you choose not to complete all 25 lessons, then you will not be able to complete this course. >> the biggest life lessons i learned with the economy, i need to rely on myself a lot more. 2012 election means a lot. i'm not sure who i like yet, but i really want the country to move forward. i want it to affect my family and me, as well, so we can really get this country back on

malala yousefzai the pakistani school girl activist shot in the head by the taliban is showing remarkable recovery. standing for the first time since the attack and even communicating with doctors. but doctors say she's not out of the woods yet. take a look at this, cnn has received hundreds of messages from around the world for malala. this one reads, "i you make a full recovery, malala! the world needs more people like you. best wishes and thank you for what you do. now to a new controversy over the september 11th attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. four americans died in the attack including ambassador

chris stevens. now the government and reform committee have released e-mails from the ambassador and other security workers and the documents paint a picture of the obama administration ignoring a rapidly deteriorating in libya. they fear the release of the unedited could endanger the lives of libyans working within the u.s. to syria now where more than 80 bodies have been found in a mass grave on the country's east coast. 80 men, women and children were all brutally executed. a u.n. arab league envoy is working for a cease-fire. more than 30,000 people have been killed in the last 19 months. there are fears that syrian violence is now spilling over to their neighbor, lebanon. in the country's capital, beirut, a large car bomb was

detonated. left rows of mangled cars and charred buildings and shook the windows in cnn's offices there, about a a ten-minute drive from that scene. a top lebanese intelligence official known for his anti-syrian stance and two others were killed in that explosion. more than 100 people were injured. nick payton walsh joins me from beirut. do we know who is responsible for this? some are pointinge fingers at syrian president. >> we do not know who is responsible. just to be clear, syria and their ally in hezbollah have condemned but that hasn't stopped politicians here pointing the finger towards them. here's what one power broker had to say. pointing the blame at assad. >> when you see what he's doing with his own people after 18

months, 19 months killing people, destroying cities, kidnapping people, torturing people. you cannot realize he's taking reshaenge. discovered the plot to sabotage the security in lebanon. >> now, this is really what's happening. up in the hills, many leading figures say concern and may also be on a list in the future and this blame game continuing as lebanon wakes up today assessing its future in the light of the substantial blast right in its future, randi. >> others are concerned. does lebanon as a whole fear more violence then? >> this morning, things have been relatively quiet. we are seeing protests getting under way and i've just been out to the main airport road and key artery in this city to see tires burning and tires still burning

blocking that key thoroughway and many of them sunni, so effectively pro western coalition. men with firearm as seeing around there and a fear of continued tension, the many it feared as a result of this, but we're still looking to the days ahead to see what happened and how long they persist. people in beirut waking up, again, to the billowing black smoke over the horizon. randi? >> if the syrian regime is behind this, why focus on lebanon, nick? >> the theory on this is entire speculation at this point. the syrian president is under great pressure and he wants to have to dotwo things. distract civil war from his own country by destabilizing his neighbor but also perhaps remind

february. he claims it was self-defense. a trip to the texas state fair took a frightening turn for some attendies after a 200-foot ride got stuck after reportedly losing power. take a look there, 24 riders were stranded but brought to safety by members of the dallas fire rescue team. finally, the first openly gay professional boxer in history is celebrating this morning. last night orlando cruz won his first match since coming out two weeks ago. the puerto rican beat his opponent in a unanimous decision. he has been touched by all his support and he hopes his big win will earn him a chance at a world title fight. victor? president obama comes back swinging in the second debate. mitt romney unknowingly puts himself in a bind and sweet, sweet honey booboo picks a president. here's what you may have missed in the week that was. >> that's why i put in a

welcome back. the dow jones dropped more than 200 points on friday in the wake of disappointing corporate earnings. but according to some wall street ceos, it's washington that is the biggest threat to wall street. earlier this week, 15 ceos from some of the nation's biggest banks wrote a letter to the president and congress urging both sides of the aisle to come together in an effort to avoid

that fiscal cliff. earlier, i asked cnn business correspondent and host of "your bottom line" christine romans if these ceos are so worried, how worried should we as the general public be? >> we should be worried. we should be worried. i've called it congressional malpractice. they're taking us to the brink here. the average tax increase of $3,500 a fromally. that means your taxes are going to go up next year. unemployment by the end of the year. a recession. if we go over the fiscal cliff, that means businesses close, factories close, people lose their homes, people lose their jobs. it's spending cuts of $1.2 trillion over a decade. that means your services are cut. if you work for these federal agencies, you'll see tons of job loss and maybe 277,000, at least temporary jobs lost there and the defense sector would be just, would be just sliced. i mean, you see a lot of jobs in places with a lot of defense

contractors, a lot of jobs lost there, as well. it's a very big deal. >> this is serious stuff. ali velshi sat down with the new york fed president. listen to what he said about the fiscal cliff. >> well, i would say it's worrisome, even today, because i think people's uncertainty about how the fiscal cliff is going to be resolved is having its effect today on hiring and investments. >> so, is that true? have we seen the effect? is just the threat of the fiscal cliff affecting jobs and investment already? >> at a very time when you're seeing the economy growing too slowly start to pick up a little bit of steam. yes, yes. when you talk to ceos and when you talk to small business owners they say, i'm just going to -- look, this is the time of year when you're making your hiring plans and business plans for next year, right? you are not going to open a new factory at the end of january if you don't know what's happening with the tax situation. you don't know whether huge government budget cuts and you don't know. if the government doesn't know how it's going to run its

business next year, you have to be very careful on how you're running yours right now. >> the white house appears ready to go to the edge with the gop and is insisting that tax cuts for the rich not be included in any compromise to avoid the cliff. the president, as you know, has been here already twice for the gop and lost. what leverage do you think he has right now, if any? >> that's a really good point because we've been here before. the the "washington post" is saying that the president will say, i will not cut taxes again on the rich. this is just a no go for the gop. so, it's promising a showdown, again, at the end of the year, even, he's lost this battle twice. i mean, some budget hawks, randi, who call them the bush/obama tax cuts for the rich because the president has extended them, once before. promises to be a tricky end to the political year. i will say, though, that some economists are starting to say that there is no way, no way that congress can give us the

enough with this character. sofia doesn't look like a latina girl and voiced by a white actress. they're upset about this. disney told reps a princess is a princess. does it really matter here? a lot of fuss made with tiana the african-american princess several years ago and so many kids have fallen in love with them and i think they'll fall in love with sofia and her first debut will be no problem. >> controversy around a cartoon and a princess. amazing. the nbc sitcom "animal practice" being canceled and peta is protesting this. >> it featured a monkey dressed in a lab coat and they a say that's cruel. they're calling the cancellation a victory. they say it sends an extremely
